Abstract
This study explored the influence of utilizing emotional character strengths of workers on their subjective well-being and job satisfaction, this was verified whether the character strengths to improve the subjective well-being and job satisfaction workers to take advantage of the emotions in everyday life. Participant groups were composed of 173 workers at call-centers. Participants completed the revised Oxford Happiness Scale (OHS-R), Index of Job Satisfaction (IJS), Turnover Intention Scale (TIS), Character Strengths Test (CST) and Korean Positive Psychology Inventory (K-PPTI). After administration of the questionnaires, participants were divided into two groups,: the treatment group (n = 8) received the maximizing character strengths program, and the non-treatment control group (n = 8) did not receive treatment. The results of this study were as follows. First, subjective and emotional well-being and job satisfaction of the workers seemed to be positively correlated with character strengths and negatively correlated with turnover intention. Particularly, among the character strengths, vitality and optimism seemed to be correlated highly with subjective well-being, job satisfaction, and turnover intention. Second, in the post-program assessment, those who received the maximizing character strengths program had increased subjective well-being and decreased turnover intention. That is, there was a positive effect on subjective well-being and turnover intention after the maximizing character strengths program. Third, analyses of pre-, post- and follow-up assessments using the Korean Positive Psychology Inventory revealed the positive gains were well preserved after the one-month follow-up. These results suggest that participators steadily applied the techniques learned in the program to their lives after the program and easily become accustomed to it, so its effects continue. Finally, the limitations and suggestions of the current study were discussed.
